With a local contractor's quote of $1200 dollars to replace my leaking tank I was motivated to find another way to get a new hot water heater installed. Two of my work associates told me they had done the install job themselves and it was really not that hard with the new type of connectors around (no sweating pipes necessary now) so I said why not. I ordered this unit and it was delivered with no problems and was packed very well. I was advised to open the box before the driver drove away to make sure there was no shipping damage and I did and there wasn't. I tipped the guy $20 for having to wait for me to cut the box open to inspect it. It only took a few minutes and then we were both happy. The install went very well and I just took it slow, re-reading the instructions a few times during the install. I used the shark bite connectors/hoses my friends at work told me about and they are just as simple to use as they said they were. The flexible SS braided hose connectors are available on Amazon.com and cost me less than $50 shipped. This tank was also a direct replacement size-wise to my old one, a good tip for a successful install. The hard part was getting the old unit drained, disconnected and out of the way. I wound up cutting an old garden hose to drain it out the back basement door.This is a good quality/well priced hot water heater. I did the installation alone and I'm over 50 so IMHO if you are handy with tools and can do some minor wiring and lifting comfortably/safely this water heater unit makes the task a great DIY job to save some serious money on. My total cost was under $500. BTW I thought the install instructions that came with the tank were pretty good and there is lots of info online. I also kept the stock factory set temperature setting and its doing fine.UPDATE-Its been over a year since I bought this (Dec 2010) and still have nothing but good things to say about it. Plenty of hot water and not a single problem or issue. This really boosted my home repair mojo. The old hot water heater I replaced lasted 24 years so with luck this will have been the last time. I mention this model to anyone I know who is looking to replace a hot water heater as a good unit to check out. Remember to inspect for damage at delivery.MM
