“The only ice I have seen since then is a thin skim on the far end of the pond on very cold nights close to 0 degrees, which melted again as the day warmed up. ”

I have tried a lot of heaters/ de-icers, including trough heaters. All were similar in wattage. Most did not work well or were unreliable. I have used this one for the last 2 winters and not only did it work great, it kept a wide area open except in very cold with high wind. Even then it kept the immediate area open. Their guide was very helpful, I bought the wattage they suggested for my zone (N. IL). I am buying another one now as a back-up, in case I can't find it later. I use it with a thermo cube to cut down on unnecessary running.
