Some water heaters have an extended interior sleeve, which will cover the drain holes in the side of the rod. Anode part of the rod works fine, sacrificing itself to spare your water heater.When you remove your existing drain plug, look inside. If the opening for the plug is longer than about 3/4", then the drain will not work for you.
